The FIRST Lego League (FLL) is designed for elementary and middle school students to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts in a fun and engaging way.
Each year, FLL teams are presented with a new challenge that is based on a real-world problem. The challenge includes a research project, as well as a robotics game, where teams build and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology to complete various missions on a playing field.
The McKinney STEAM Academy hosts two levels of FIRST LEGO League; FLL Explore and FLL Challenge. FLL Explore (ages 6-10) teaches kids how to use teamwork to overcome problems as they build, code, and compete with a student-built robot made entirely of LEGO. FLL Challenge (ages 9-16) teams complete a research project to identify and solve a relevant global problem while they build and program a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of the yearly game.
Our 5 FLL teams, 54586, 51620, 50491, 27183, and 27116 learn important skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and communication. They will compete in local and regional competitions and may be invited to the World Festival where teams from all around the world showcase their projects and compete for awards
